MT4 to MT5 trade copier
Brokers and prop firms keep moving to MT5 while strategies, EAs and habits stay on MT4. CopyTraderTool copies every trade from an MT4 account to one or more MT5 accounts, at the same broker or a different one, without an EA on either terminal and without a VPS. Here is what changes between the two platforms and how the copier deals with it.

An MT4 strategy mirrored to MT5
The MT4 account keeps running its EA; the MT5 account receives every open, partial close and stop change.

Why copy MT4 to MT5
- Moving brokers or platforms gradually. Keep the MT4 account trading while the MT5 account follows, compare the fills, and switch when you trust the new setup.
- An EA that only exists for MT4. Many expert advisors were never ported. Run it on MT4 and let the copier carry its trades to MT5.
- Prop firms on MT5. A strategy that lives on a personal MT4 account can be copied into an MT5 challenge, sized for the challenge rules.
- One master, many accounts. One MT4 source can feed several MT5 accounts, each with its own sizing.
What is different between MT4 and MT5
| MT4 | MT5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Position accounting | Every order is its own ticket (hedging) | Hedging or netting, chosen per account |
| Partial close | Closes part and creates a new ticket for the rest | Reduces the volume of the same position |
| Pending order types | Buy/sell limit, buy/sell stop | Same four, plus buy/sell stop limit |
| Volume | Lots | Lots (same units) |
| Symbol list | Set by the broker's MT4 server | Set by the broker's MT5 server; names and contracts can differ |
MT4 → MT5 is the easy direction: everything an MT4 account can do has an equivalent on an MT5 hedging account. When the MT4 source closes part of a position, the copier copies it as a partial close: your MT5 position is reduced by the same share rather than a second trade being opened.
Use a hedging MT5 account, not netting
On a netting account, MT5 merges every trade on a symbol into one position: two buys of 0.10 become one 0.20 position, and a sell reduces it. That makes it impossible to track copied trades one by one or to hold a buy and a sell at the same time, which MT4 sources often do. CopyTraderTool therefore requires hedging MT5 accounts. Most brokers open hedging accounts by default; if you are unsure, check the account type in the MT5 terminal or ask your broker before connecting it.
Same broker, different symbols
A broker's MT4 and MT5 servers are separate systems. It is common to find different suffixes (EURUSD on MT4, EURUSD.r on MT5), different index names, and occasionally different contract sizes for indices and commodities. Suffixes and known aliases are matched automatically. Contract differences are not a naming problem: check them once in the symbol specification, and use risk percent or an adjusted multiplier if they differ. Details in symbol mapping and index copying.
Setting up an MT4 → MT5 copier
- Add the MT4 account as a source with its investor password. Read-only access is enough to see trades.
- Add the MT5 hedging account as a target with its trading password.
- Create the copier. For an identical-size mirror, use lot multiplier ×1; for a different balance, risk by balance or equity.
- Decide whether trades already open on MT4 should be copied when the copier starts ("copy existing trades").
- Send a test trade and check the symbol, size and stops in History, then switch the copier on.
Using the investor password on the source means the copier cannot change anything on the MT4 account. See investor vs trading password.
MT4 to MT5 copier: questions
Do I need to install an EA on MT4 or MT5?
No. Both accounts connect to our cloud with their login and password. No EA, no terminal kept open, no VPS.
Can the MT4 and MT5 accounts be at different brokers?
Yes. Cross-broker copying works in both directions; symbol names are matched automatically and each target is sized for its own balance.
Why isn't my MT5 netting account supported?
A netting account merges all trades on a symbol into a single position, so copied trades can't be tracked individually and opposite trades cancel out. Ask your broker for an MT5 hedging account.
What happens when the MT4 source partially closes a trade?
The copier copies it as a partial close: your MT5 position is reduced by the same share of its volume. Test it once with a demo source if your strategy closes in many small steps.
Will an MT4 EA's magic number be visible on MT5?
The copied MT5 trade carries the copier's own comment and magic number, which you can set per copier, so you can tell copied trades apart from trades opened by hand.
