Prop firm copy trading without breaking the rules
Copying into a challenge or funded account is mostly about the rules you must not touch: the daily loss limit, the maximum drawdown, and the firm's policy on news and third-party copying. CopyTraderTool connects to prop-firm MT4 and MT5 servers like any broker, and adds the controls that keep a copier inside those lines: equity-based sizing, lot caps, a news pause and EquityShield rules that act before the firm does.

Daily loss rule: alert + pause at −4% of day-start equity
One strategy, a challenge and a funded account
Each prop account gets equity-based sizing and its own lot cap; EquityShield watches the daily limit on each.
- Typical daily loss limit
- 4–5% of the starting or day-start balance
- Typical max drawdown
- 8–12%, static or trailing

Read the rules before you connect anything
Prop firms differ, and their terms change. Before copying into a prop account, find the answers to these questions in your firm's rules or by asking support:
- Is copy trading allowed at all, and is it allowed from your own accounts only or also from third-party signals?
- Is copying the same trades into several accounts at the same firm treated as fine, as account stacking, or as group trading?
- How is the daily loss measured: from the day-start balance, the day-start equity, or the higher of the two, and at what time does the firm's day reset?
- Is the maximum drawdown static (from the starting balance) or trailing (from the highest balance or equity reached)?
- Are there restrictions on trading around high-impact news, holding over the weekend, or a consistency rule on daily profits?
Sizing for prop accounts
Risk by equity is the safest default for a prop account: if the account is already in drawdown, new trades shrink with it. Combine it with a max lot cap so a source that sizes up can never push one trade past what your daily limit can absorb.
How large can one trade be?
- $100,000 challenge, daily loss limit 5% → $5,000.
- You want a single stopped-out trade to use at most a quarter of that: $1,250.
- Typical stop 25 pips on EURUSD at $10 per pip per lot → $250 per lot.
- $1,250 ÷ $250 = 5.00 lots as your max lot cap.
If your source is a Telegram channel, use risk percent at 0.25–0.5% per signal, turn on "skip signals without SL", and cap open trades so a burst of posts cannot stack into a daily-limit breach. The lot size calculator helps you work out the numbers.
EquityShield: your own daily loss and drawdown lines
EquityShield rules sit on the target account and act when equity crosses a line: email alert, alert and pause copiers, or alert, pause and close every position. For prop accounts the useful rules are:
| Firm rule | EquityShield rule | Suggested line |
|---|---|---|
| Daily loss 5% | Daily loss percent, baseline day-start equity | 3.5–4%, action: pause and close |
| Max drawdown 10% static | Protect value at starting balance minus 10% | Set 1–2% above the firm's line |
| Profit target 8% | Target percent | Alert, or pause copiers to stop trading once passed |
Daily rules re-arm at 00:00 UTC. Many firms reset their day at a different time (for example 17:00 New York), so leave a buffer rather than setting the line exactly at the limit. Equity moves between checks and stops can slip, so a line at exactly 5% can still end the day at 5.2%. More in drawdown protection.
News, weekends and consistency
Firms that restrict news trading usually forbid opening or closing trades within a few minutes of high-impact releases. The news filter pauses new entries in a window you choose around those events. It does not stop the source from closing a trade, and a stop or target can still be hit by the market, so a strict news rule may also need you to avoid holding through releases.
For weekend-holding rules, a time filter can block new entries late on Friday; closing open positions before the weekend is up to you or your source. Consistency rules (no single day above a share of total profit) are easier to respect with a fixed risk per trade than with lot mirroring.
A safe setup in five steps
- Add the prop account with its trading password; pick the firm's server from the list.
- Create the copier from your source and apply the Prop-firm safe preset.
- Set the max lot cap and maximum open trades from your firm's limits, as in the example above.
- Add EquityShield rules for daily loss and maximum drawdown with a buffer.
- Send a test trade, check size and symbol in History, then switch the copier on.
Prop firm copy trading: questions
Do prop firms allow trade copiers?
Many allow copying between your own accounts and some allow third-party signals; others forbid it or limit how many accounts may trade identically. Read your firm's rules or ask its support before you start. You are responsible for compliance.
Will EquityShield guarantee I never break the daily limit?
No. It acts on equity as it updates, and closing positions takes time; fast markets and slippage can carry losses past the line. Set your rule with a buffer below the firm's limit.
Can I copy one strategy into several prop accounts?
Technically yes: each source-to-account link is one copier. Whether your firm allows identical trades on several accounts is a rules question. Some firms treat it as account stacking.
Which password does the prop account need?
The trading (master) password, because the copier must place orders. The source can use its investor password. See investor vs trading password.
What is the Prop-firm safe preset?
A starting configuration with equity-based sizing, a lot cap and the news pause turned on. You can change every field afterwards to match your firm's rules.
Does the news filter close my trades before news?
No. It pauses new entries around high-impact events. Open trades stay open and keep being managed. If your firm forbids holding through news, close positions yourself or use a source that does.
